Archbishop of Armagh Finally Enthroned after Eighteen Month Wait

On the evening of 14 September, The Most Revd John McDowell, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland was finally enthroned at St Patrick’s Cathedral  on the Hill of Armagh.  The service had been delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.  McDowell, who is sixty-five years of age, was elected by the House of Bishops in early March of 2020.  He had been the Bishop of Clogher Diocese since 2011.  His immediate predecessor at Clogher had been the present Archbishop of Dublin, Michael Jackson.

The Dean of Armagh Cathedral, the Very Revd Shane Forster, formally welcomed the new Primate.  He was joined in the welcome by other Church of Ireland bishops and the General Secretary of the Methodist Church in Ireland during the socially distanced service.  Music was provided by the Cathedral Choir accompanied by Assistant Organist, the Revd Dr Peter Thompson.
