Roman Catholic Diocese Financially Liable for Actions of
Defrocked Cardinal McCarrick
According to press reports by the American based, Catholic News Agency, a federal judge determined that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark could be held financially responsible for the “abuse committed by Theodore McCarrick. McCarrick had once served as Archbishop of Newark and was made a Cardinal by the late Pope John Paul II.
Federal District Judge, Madeline Arleo issued the ruling after a series of hearings.
The current Bishop of Rome defrocked McCarrick in 2019 after having found him guilty of “solicitation in the Sacrament of Confession …with the aggravating factor of abuse of power.”
