Sir David Amess Assassinated
Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, Essex was assassinated by a 25 year old British man of Somali background whilst holding a constituency surgery in the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, 15 October. A knife was used in the murder.
Preliminary reports say that the killer stabbed Sir David as many as 17 times. Police have said the killing was a terrorist offence.
The MP was one of the most outspoken supporters regarding Pro-Life issues in the House of Commons. MPs from both sides praised him personally and professionally.
Mike Wood, Conservative MP for Dudley South said, “I’ve never heard anybody—from any party—say a bad word about @amess_southend (Amess’ Twitter handle). He was a thoroughly nice and decent guy.”
Amess, was a devout Roman Catholic and is survived by his wife and five children. He belonged to the Conservative party and was 69 years of age.
He was the second Member of Parliament to have been assassinated in recent years. Labour MP Jo Cox was assassinated on 16 June 2016.
