Church Times Reports Unhappy Clergy Meeting with Bishop of London
Reporter Ed Thornton of Church Times reports that an estimated 150 – 200 London Diocesan clergy met with the Bishop of London in the aftermath of the General Synod’s decision to bless same-sex civil marriages.
Thornton reported that the meeting took place at St James Garlickhythe. On 23 February. Other reports say that the meeting kept having to be rescheduled in order to find a place large enough to hold the numbers involved. Other sources told the English Churchman that the meeting lasted two hours.
It was reported that representatives from the Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) network, ReNew, New Wine, Fulcrum, and even some from traditionalist minded Anglo-Catholic congregations were all in attendance.
The Bishop of London was quoted by Church Times as saying, “Finding ways to walk together with our diversity and differences is not comfortable. Yet I know that to separate, to walk apart would greatly impoverish and harm the Church of England, which has always been an intentionally and uniquely broad Church.”
It would seem that the Bishop of London struggles with understanding the distinction between being a broad church and espousing heresy as concomitant with biblical doctrine and the Canons of the Church of England.
