Sentamu Inhibited From Ministry

The Bishop of Newcastle has inhibited the former Archbishop of York from all ministry following the publication of the independent lessons learnt review into the case of the deceased Church of England cleric, Trevor Devamanikkam.   Up until the inhibition, Lord Sentamu was an Honorary Assistant Bishop in Newcastle Diocese.

According to a statement released in conjunction with the announcement, current Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell is “fully supportive of this decision.”

The Diocesan Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, made the decision to inhibit Sentamu after “having taken appropriate advice …until both the findings and his response can be explored further.”  A spokesman for the diocese said, “the Diocese of Newcastle remains committed to the highest standards of safeguarding which seeks always to place victims and survivors at the heart of this vital work.”
